All three people on board a light aircraft were killed when it crashed near Leukerbad in the canton of Valais on Tuesday, SRF reports, citing the Valais cantonal police.
The Cirrus SR22T had taken off from Lugano and stopped at Sion Airport before continuing towards Buochs airfield in the canton of Nidwalden. Shortly after 4 p.m., the aircraft collided with a northern slope in the Fluhalp area near Leukerbad for reasons that remain unclear.
Other people later reported heavy smoke in the region. Rescue teams from the Valais cantonal rescue organisation arrived with three helicopters and two rescue specialists, but could only confirm the deaths of the three occupants. Formal identification of the victims is under way.
