Swiss postal customs officials have seized two suspected counterfeit five-franc coins dated 1928 from a small shipment sent from Hong Kong, SRF reported. The coins are highly sought after by collectors.
Officials at the Zurich-Mülligen mail centre became suspicious when they examined the coins more closely on August 17, the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security said. While their diameter matched that of an original coin, their weights differed significantly.
The office handed the suspected counterfeits and the case to the Aargau Cantonal Police for further investigation. The shipment was addressed to a recipient in Aargau.
According to the customs office, original five-franc coins from 1928 can be worth several thousand Swiss francs each.
