The Sportpool association has raised more than €4 million to support athletes from Burgenland over the past 25 years, ORF reported. Its funding has contributed to successes including medals at the Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as at World and European Championships.
The Sportpool was founded in 2001 on the initiative of then-governor Hans Niessl of the Social Democratic Party. Its aim was to provide financial support to Burgenland athletes throughout their careers.
The association is funded by numerous business sponsors and raises about €200,000 a year. Independent sports journalists from Burgenland decide how the money is distributed.
“Over the past 25 years, we have collected and passed on more than four million euros,” said Thomas Trukeschitz, chairman of Sportpool Burgenland. He said the funds were made available particularly to athletes in sports that have more difficulty attracting sponsors and other funding.
About 200 athletes have received support from Sportpool Burgenland since 2001.
