Roman building remains uncovered during construction in Ticino

Roman building remains dating from the second or third century AD have been uncovered during construction of a new residential building in Ligornetto, Ticino, SRF reported.

The building stood beside a road and formed part of an extensive area used for crafts and agriculture. Finds include a brick platform, masonry made from reused bricks and a bronze zoomorphic brooch that probably depicts a peacock.

Excavations are under way across an area of about 500 square metres and are expected to be completed in autumn 2026. The Ticino Department for Spatial Planning said in a statement seen by RSI, the Italian-language Swiss radio and television service, that the excavation site will open to the public on Wednesday, September 16, at 3.30pm. Visitors will be able to view the exposed Roman settlement.
