Fuel prices climb again as ÖAMTC warns of further increases

Average fuel prices have risen again to 2.135 euros per litre for diesel and 1.926 euros for petrol, ORF Upper Austria reported on Wednesday. The ÖAMTC motoring club expects prices to remain high for some time.

The renewed increase is being driven by rising crude oil prices, according to the ÖAMTC. Dominik Graf of the motoring club told ORF Upper Austria that tensions between Iran and the United States had intensified again and that refinery stocks had already been depleted.

Upper Austria remains among cheaper regions

Upper Austria is still one of the cheaper regions in Austria in a comparison between the federal states. The ÖAMTC partly attributes this to the region’s proximity to the Czech Republic, where fuel is significantly cheaper and creates additional pressure on domestic filling stations.

Further increases expected

The ÖAMTC does not expect prices to ease quickly. Instead, it forecasts further increases on the crude oil market.

The motoring club also renewed its criticism of fuel pricing. Rising crude oil prices are usually passed on to drivers quickly, it said, while falling prices on the global market often take longer to reach filling stations.
