Salzburg adds 25 sensors to track river temperatures

Salzburg’s Hydrographic Service is installing 25 additional sensors to improve monitoring of river temperatures, ORF reports. The project aims to address a shortage of meaningful data on the temperature of the region’s rivers.

The sensors will be installed at monitoring stations on the Salzach, Saalach, Enns and Mur rivers, as well as on important tributaries. They will be placed where the water is well mixed, making the readings more comparable.

Many existing measuring devices were installed where water levels can be recorded effectively, but those locations are often unsuitable for measuring water temperature. Harald Huemer, head of the Hydrographic Service, said continuous readings would make it possible to track temperature changes in real time and identify critical periods.

The data will be made freely available online. The project will cost around 30,000 euros.
