S-Bahn trunk route closure to disrupt Vienna travel through 2027

Vienna’s S-Bahn trunk route between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof will close from September 7 until October 2027, ORF reported. Transport planner Harald Frey expects delays despite replacement services and alternative routes.

The closure follows the end of the summer shutdown between Praterstern and Floridsdorf. The section between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof was closed three weeks earlier than planned because of a cable fire.

ÖBB advises passengers to use Vienna’s public transport network. A shuttle bus will run between Meidling and Längenfeldgasse from September 7. Tram lines O, 62 and 18 will operate at adjusted intervals with longer trains, while four underground lines will also run more frequently.

Passengers travelling to the airport will be able to use the S-Bahn via Hauptbahnhof and the S7 from St Marx. The CAT will provide replacement buses from Wien Mitte, while the Vienna Airport Bus will also run from Praterstern and Karlsplatz.

Frey, a transport planner at TU Wien, said overcrowding was particularly likely at the beginning of the closure. He warned that transfer capacity on the narrow platforms would also be limited and said passengers would need time to adjust. The shortened intervals would have to be maintained, he added, predicting problems in surface transport, including trams.

Frey generally welcomed the long closure as a way to increase the capacity of the S-Bahn trunk route. However, he said further measures would be needed, particularly at Hauptbahnhof and Meidling station. The challenge would be managing growing passenger numbers not only on the route but also in the stations and handling new traffic flows across the network.
