Video tolling is now available to all drivers using the Felbertauern Tunnel, ORF reported, after a year-long trial. Automatic number plate recognition had previously been limited to commuters.
The Felbertauernstraßen AG road company said the trial had proved successful in all seasons. Digital processing on all toll lanes has significantly sped up passage and reduced queues at toll booths, according to Elisabeth Kreuzer, the company’s chief executive.
Tickets bought through the new online toll shop are valid for two years. The barrier opens automatically when the vehicle is recognised.
Kreuzer said implementing the system at an altitude of almost 1,600 metres was challenging. In winter, dirt and slush on number plates can prevent the video system from recognising them. The company therefore plans to expand the system gradually and continue developing number plate recognition.
