Vienna’s ice-skating season begins Thursday, with the Wiener Eislauf-Verein opening its outdoor rink for free and other rinks set to follow in the coming days, ORF reports.
The Wiener Eislauf-Verein, an outdoor artificial-ice rink at Heumarkt between the Konzerthaus and Stadtpark, opens for public skating at 3 p.m. A Radio Wien disco with DJ Alex List starts at 5 p.m. A charity ice-stock tournament benefiting Licht ins Dunkel will take place in the evening, with personalities including Valerie Huber, Eva Pölzl and Jakob Seeböck taking part.
The Kunsteisbahn Engelmann, an outdoor artificial-ice rink in Vienna’s 17th district, opens on Friday. Founded more than 100 years ago as the world’s first outdoor artificial-ice rink, it has been located on a rooftop since the 1970s. Its skating area covers 3,000 square metres.
The Albert-Schultz-Eishalle, an indoor ice rink in the 22nd district, opens on Saturday. The Eisring Süd in the 10th district, which offers both indoor and outdoor ice, has been open since October 25.
The Eistraum at the Rathausplatz Christmas market opens on November 13 with about 3,000 square metres of ice. After a short break early in the new year, the rink will become the Wiener Eistraum, with more than 10,000 square metres of skating areas and an ice terrace called the Sky Rink.
