Eight-year-old saves father after hornet sting triggers anaphylactic shock

An eight-year-old girl saved her father after a hornet sting caused him to lose consciousness in Imbach in the Krems district, ORF reported.

Josef Brunner was cutting lilac bushes in the garden when a hornet stung him on the temple. He cooled the sting with an ice pack but soon realised he was suffering an anaphylactic shock caused by the venom. Although he was still able to call emergency services, he then became unconscious.

His daughter Lilly took over the call with the emergency centre. While speaking to the operator, she also contacted her mother, Marie-Jeanne, using her smartwatch. Her mother, a general practitioner and emergency doctor, was at her medical practice and immediately drove home.

By the time she arrived, Lilly had opened the gate with a remote control and directed the emergency responders to the house. Her mother gave Josef an injection before he was taken to Krems Hospital. He was discharged the following day.

Lilly had attended several children’s emergency courses and had learned first-aid tips at school. She began accompanying her mother to the courses at the age of three.

Her father said he was proud of her, describing her as calm and composed throughout the emergency. Lilly said she would like to work in medicine in the future, but not with people. She wants to become a vet.
