Carinthia, motorway fire, road safety

A car towing a caravan caught fire on the Karawanken motorway in Carinthia late Monday, ORF reported. The driver, a 67-year-old man from Germany, managed to stop and detach the caravan before the car was completely destroyed.

At about 9.30 p.m., the man was travelling towards Slovenia when his Mercedes suddenly lost power near the exit to the Rosenbach lorry parking area. Flames were already coming from the engine compartment when he stopped in the exit lane.

The St. Jakob/Rosental volunteer fire brigade said it was important that the driver detach the caravan because it contained gas cylinders.

The St. Jakob/Rosental, Rosegg and Die Höhe volunteer fire brigades attended the incident. The extent of the damage was not yet known.
