Firefighters rescued a resident from an apartment in Vienna’s Leopoldstadt district after an e-scooter battery caught fire while charging in the entrance area on Monday morning, ORF reported. The blaze was quickly extinguished.

The resident, who lived on the second floor of a multi-unit building, could no longer leave and shouted for help from a window. The professional fire brigade used an extension ladder to bring him to safety. Emergency medical personnel treated the young man before taking him to hospital, the fire brigade said.

When firefighters arrived at Körnergasse, thick smoke was already coming from several windows. The fire had spread to furniture and other items in the entrance area. The cause of the battery fire remains under investigation.

Fire brigade issues charging warning

Vienna’s emergency rescue service advised people to store and charge batteries only where a smoke detector is present. No flammable materials should be kept nearby, and batteries must never be stored or charged on escape routes.
