Four unidentified men broke into Munich’s Frauenkirche church during the night and damaged a lift in its south tower, BR reported. Police said electronic cameras recorded the incident.
According to police, the men forced their way through an upper window of a non-public section of the church via construction scaffolding at about 2 a.m. on Thursday.
Investigators believe they then tried to operate the lift to the viewing platform in the south tower. When it did not work, they damaged it. The lift was initially unavailable for tourist rides on Thursday.
Police are seeking witnesses who saw four men carrying backpacks near the Frauenkirche between 2 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. on Thursday. Three of them were wearing shorts. Police described their appearance as European.
Investigators are treating the case as trespassing and criminal damage.
