Austria’s police will use drones this year to help protect Advent and Christmas markets, ORF reported Saturday. The Interior Ministry said there are currently no specific indications of threats.
Drones are part of a modern operational strategy, the ministry said, giving police a better overview of large crowds and helping them spot potential dangers early and coordinate emergency responders.
An amendment to the Aviation Act allows state police directorates to impose temporary drone no-fly zones if a risk assessment warrants them. The Cobra special operations unit could also be deployed to stop illegal or improper drone operations.
Police will maintain a visible presence, particularly at Advent markets and events in busy public places. Officers from the state security service and specially equipped police units will also be on duty. Franz Ruf, director-general for public security, said security measures would be tailored to each location.
The Directorate for State Security and Intelligence is monitoring developments in Austria and abroad and sharing information with state police directorates and international partners. The measures are being coordinated with event organisers and security authorities.
The Federal Criminal Police Office has also warned about pickpockets and confidence tricksters who take advantage of crowds at markets and shopping streets. It advises visitors to keep valuables close, carry closed bags at the front of the body and take only a small amount of cash. Anyone whose belongings are stolen should contact police and immediately block any stolen bank, credit or SIM cards.
