FC Liefering and Austria Salzburg meet on Friday in a derby shaped by sporting rivalry and a debate over stadium use, ORF reports. The clubs have different profiles but both come into the match after recent successes.
Austria Salzburg, a fan-focused club, won 3-0 against Amstetten and sits fourth in the table. Coach Christian Schaider said the result and positive signs in the club’s stadium discussions had lifted morale ahead of the match.
Liefering, described as an international talent academy, has also won recently in the league and the UEFA Youth League. It is seventh in the second-division table. Differences in budgets, training facilities, history and fan bases add to the derby’s appeal for supporters.
Liefering managing director Manfred Pamminger expects a close contest, although his team played during the week and faces a heavier workload. He said the derby may mean more to younger players who have followed it for longer than to players from outside Salzburg.
More than 4,000 fans are expected at the Kleßheim stadium. Austria captain Florian Rieder said his team would need to stay focused on the match despite the heightened atmosphere.
A police-escorted march by about 2,000 Austria fans will leave Taxham S-Bahn station at 16:30 and proceed to the visiting supporters’ section via Peter-Pfenniger-Straße, Kleßheimer Allee and Martin-Luther-Platz. The route is expected to be closed to traffic until about 18:00. The match starts at 18:30. Police said they would deploy uniformed and plainclothes officers. The march will not pass through central Salzburg.
The derby also comes as Austria Salzburg’s stadium options remain under discussion. One proposal is for the club to share the Kleßheim arena with Red Bull if Austria reaches the Bundesliga. Salzburg’s sports councillor, Martin Zauner of the FPÖ, said the idea was theoretical for now, citing existing contracts and the high costs of operating matches at the arena. Red Bull’s lease runs until 2040.
