Bavaria’s regional government has approved a deportation terminal at Munich Airport, BR reported, clearing the way for construction of the controversial facility.
Munich Airport GmbH plans to build the terminal on airport grounds in Freising and rent it to the federal government. It is scheduled to open in 2028 and will be operated by the Federal Police. The aim is to make deportations easier and faster, with up to 100 refugees expected to be deported to their countries of origin each day.
The Government of Upper Bavaria issued the planning approval decision. The approval was disclosed at a committee meeting of the Freising city council. The government has not yet published or put the decision on public display, but said both steps were being prepared.
The project has drawn protests. The campaign “Stop the deportation terminal MUC” called the facility inhumane and accused the airport of profiting from deportations.
