Burgenland and ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG have signed five agreements covering the implementation and joint funding of rail projects, with the state contributing 24.41 million euros, ORF reported Friday.

The projects cover the Pannonia railway, the Mattersburg railway, the Burgenland railway and the planned Ebenfurth loop. Their total investment is 109.55 million euros. The state’s contribution is about 22 percent, counting only the parts of cross-border projects located in Burgenland.

Burgenland transport councillor Heinrich Dorner and ÖBB-Infrastruktur board member Johann Pluy signed the agreements. They set out project-specific funding arrangements based on a 2021 framework agreement between Burgenland, the then Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology, and ÖBB-Infrastruktur.

Some of the projects have already been completed or are under way. Dorner said they were important to the state’s overall transport strategy and described them as a commitment to a more modern, accessible railway with better connections.

Work across four rail routes

On the Pannonia railway between Neusiedl am See and Wulkaprodersdorf, platforms were extended and stops made accessible. That project was completed in 2024. Electrification of the Mattersburg railway is due to continue until the end of 2027.

In Deutschkreutz, a freight loading point is being moved outside the town centre. The station is scheduled for modernisation in 2028.

The planned Ebenfurth loop would connect the Pottendorfer line with the Raaberbahn route towards Wulkaprodersdorf. Together with the double-tracking of the Pottendorfer line, it is intended to provide Burgenland commuters with a direct connection towards Vienna. Planning is complete, and the project is currently in an appeals process.
