A Pinzgau initiative is urging a more factual debate about wind power as possible projects unsettle residents, ORF Salzburg reported. It held an information evening in Taxenbach to address concerns and explain the proposals.
Wind power projects are being discussed in several Pinzgau municipalities. Salzburg has no wind turbines so far, but 11 possible priority zones have been identified. Two are in Dienten, at Schneeberg and Hochegg, on the border with Taxenbach. Surveys of wind conditions for potential electricity generation began there in late October.
Project companies are reportedly approaching landowners to seek agreements, causing concern among nearby residents. About 80 people attended the Taxenbach event. Mario Wallner, from the Climate and Energy Model Region and the KLAR! Pinzgau initiative, said speakers were interrupted by emotional comments and accusations.
Wallner said people often feared wind power because it was new, and that discussion focused on what turbines might look like rather than potential benefits for residents and the regional economy.
Gerhard Löffler, head of the energy industry department at the State of Salzburg, said wind power could help meet winter electricity demand. Hydropower and solar power mainly provide electricity in summer, while 40 to 60 percent of Salzburg’s electricity needs in winter are met by imports, he said.
The state aims to meet all its electricity needs from renewable sources by 2030, with wind power expected to contribute. Any potential projects in Pinzgau still require numerous assessments and approval procedures.
