Crews secure fire-damaged Kehlsteinhaus ahead of winter

Thursday 5th November 2026 on 15:30 in Austria

Berchtesgaden, fire, Kehlsteinhaus

Work is advancing to protect the fire-damaged Kehlsteinhaus, a building erected by the Nazis at Obersalzberg in Berchtesgaden, before winter, ORF reported. A tower crane was assembled on Thursday, with a helicopter carrying its components to the building.

The crane is intended to make further work easier, the Bergerlebnis Berchtesgaden tourism association said. Because the building is difficult to access, the crane was flown in and assembled with support from the helicopter.

The Kehlstein lift was inspected by TÜV on Wednesday and given restricted clearance to operate again, making it easier to transport workers and materials to the building.

The priority is to install a temporary roof and make the building as weather-resistant as possible to prevent further damage from snow and other weather. The pace of work will also depend on conditions.
