Ground has been broken on a 72 million euro hotel and housing project in Mautern, in the Krems district, ORF reports. Vienna-based private developer Mamma Group is funding the development, which includes a hotel and 108 apartments.

The Hotel Schloss Mautern is planned as a four-star superior hotel with 126 rooms and suites. Fifty-one rooms will be in the castle, with another 75 in a new building next to it. The castle, Roman hall and granary will be renovated, and the hotel will include a wellness area and a rooftop terrace overlooking the Danube.

Owner Herbert Pinzolits said development work began nine years ago. Archaeological excavations were required before construction because Mautern stands on the remains of a Roman garrison town. Pinzolits said it took two years to determine what could be altered or removed, with the project requiring coordination with the Federal Monuments Office. The town is also in the Wachau, a UNESCO World Heritage region.

The company continued with the project despite delays and global economic crises. The provincial government supported the planning phase and covered part of the archaeological excavation costs. The hotel is scheduled to open in March 2029.

The hotel is expected to create more than 100 jobs in Mautern. The neighbouring Donaupark development will include 108 apartments, with the residential complex and landscaped park due for completion in spring 2028. Mautern Mayor Heinrich Brustbauer said the project would bring housing and jobs to the town and benefit local businesses. Lower Austrian Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner said the hotel could help boost year-round tourism in the Wachau.
