A castle in Mannersdorf am Leithagebirge is closely associated with Empress Maria Theresa and composer Joseph Haydn. It hosts concerts and serves as the town hall, among other uses, ORF reports.

Haydn spent time at the castle as a young man, according to Michael Linsbauer, artistic director of the Haydn Region Lower Austria. Composer Christoph Willibald Gluck is also said to have met Haydn there. The castle has hosted a chamber music concert every year since the series began in 2018.

The concerts take place in the Maria Theresa Hall, whose elaborate ceiling painting dates to around 1730. It depicts the sun god Helios, the seasons, people at work and the nearby villages of Hof, Sommerein, Au and Mannersdorf as they appeared at the time.

The castle is also linked to Countess Fuchs, Maria Theresa’s governess, close friend and household manager. Historian Heribert Schutzbier said the empress and her husband, Franz Stephan, visited with a small entourage because the countess had a large house suitable for receiving them. Maria Theresa stayed at the castle and bathed in Mannersdorf’s thermal spring.

The building developed from a small estate belonging to the Order of St George around 1500 into a grand residence used for representation. The municipality now owns it and houses its offices there, along with a council chamber, a library, apartments and a gallery displaying works by painter Edmund Adler, who lived in Mannersdorf.

Mayor Günther Amelin said the municipality carries out small restoration jobs itself, while the apartments help keep the castle in use. Maintaining and activating the building is a challenge for the small town, but its varied uses and cultural events attract visitors and bring economic activity to the municipality.
