A car and a lorry collided on the Nibelungenstraße in Pupping, in Eferding district, on Wednesday, killing the car’s driver at the scene, ORF Upper Austria reported. The cause of the crash was not immediately known.

Police said they had not yet established how the vehicles collided. It was also unclear how long the road would be closed or whether anyone else was injured. Investigations into the cause were under way.

Experts say the risk of accidents rises in autumn because of poor visibility in fog, early dusk and low sun. Wet leaves and dirty road surfaces can also make roads slippery. Experts also warn of increased wildlife crossings and slow-moving agricultural traffic during the harvest.

Several other fatal crashes have been reported in recent days. On November 1, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a small lorry in Braunau am Inn district. A 49-year-old quad bike rider died on November 2 after a crash on a forest road in Maria Alm.

At the end of October, a wrong-way driver caused a fatal head-on collision on the B1 in Wels. Later, a 20-year-old passenger died after a car left the road on the B41 near Ehrendorf in Gmünd district.
