A 28-year-old Algerian man was sentenced to 13 years in prison for attempted murder after a knife attack at Salzburg’s main railway station, ORF reported on Tuesday. The verdict is not final.

The 30-year-old German victim survived. The defendant told the court he had been defending himself against attacks by the German man, but the court rejected his account.

According to the indictment, the attack followed a fight at Südtiroler Platz, the square outside the station. The Salzburger Nachrichten reported that while the defendant and another man were on the ground, the victim pulled the Algerian man by his hood. The defendant is accused of then stabbing the German three times in the legs with a folding knife.

The defendant had been released from prison three months before the attack, after serving a sentence for theft.
