Study finds women dominate low-paid retail jobs in Styria
More than a quarter of women working in retail in Styria earn less than 2,500 euros gross a month, the highest share in Austria, ORF reported. Workers’ representatives are seeking a 3.8 percent pay rise for retail employees.
A study by the Momentum Institute found that about 76,200 retail workers across Austria earn below that monthly threshold. In Styria, 28 percent of women in the sector fall below it, compared with 21 percent of men. The state ranks second nationally behind Burgenland for the share of women in this income group.
The median gross hourly wage for retail employees is 19.04 euros, below the average across the overall economy. Cashiers earn particularly little, at 15.52 euros an hour. Women make up more than 75 percent of workers in the lowest-paid retail jobs.
