Austria’s ÖBB railway company plans to modernise Hütteldorf station, with construction due to start at the end of 2029 and finish by 2035, ORF reported.

The project includes restoring the station’s historic Art Nouveau building and redesigning both forecourts. The ÖBB says the northern forecourt will offer a substantially improved place to spend time. The station is also due to become fully accessible, with better transfer arrangements for passengers.

Rail infrastructure, including railway bridges, will also be upgraded. Plans include adding a second track to the S45 line between Hütteldorf and Penzing, as well as building a new station at Wien Baumgarten. The changes are intended to enable more transfer options and shorter service intervals.

Planning documents are being finalised, with an application to the relevant authority planned for 2026. The ÖBB will hold public information sessions on Tuesday, November 3, and Wednesday, November 4, from 3pm to 7pm on the second floor of the Allianz Stadium at Gerhard-Hanappi-Platz. Registration is requested.

The Hütteldorf project is adjacent to the ÖBB’s Verbindungsbahn project. Citizen initiatives have previously opposed the railway expansion, arguing it would divide Hietzing.
