Hiker dies after falling 150 to 200 metres near Schröcken

A 60-year-old Austrian hiker died after falling 150 to 200 metres while descending from the Höferspitze mountain near Schröcken on Saturday, ORF reported.

The man had hiked with his wife from a mountain pass over the Höferkamm ridge to the 2,131-metre summit. After resting there, they began their return at about 1.30pm. Police said he fell without any external cause into a rocky gully.

A police helicopter recovered the man’s body. His wife was flown to the valley by a rescue helicopter and cared for by the Schröcken mountain rescue service.
