Lustenau will discuss specific road safety measures with Vorarlberg state officials on 3 November, after two cyclists were killed in truck crashes in the municipality this year, ORF reported on Sunday.

The meeting follows a safety summit in September, where representatives of the state, Lustenau, the district authority and police agreed that improvements were needed. Lustenau Mayor Patrick Wiedl said this year’s serious crashes had again highlighted the urgent need for action.

The municipality has submitted a list of requests to the state, including safer crossings and traffic lights on Reichsstraße, Bahnhofstraße and Zellgasse, as well as additional road markings. It is also seeking structural changes at the Blumenau and Lustenauer Hof junctions.

Some work has already been done on Zellgasse, including resurfacing and new red markings at crossings. Wiedl said these were a first step but not enough. Lustenau is willing to contribute to improvements at the Blumenau junction, provided the state also carries out the necessary work on the state road. The municipality has given the state land for improvements at Lustenauer Hof.

The state and, in some cases, the district authority are responsible for major road and traffic changes on the routes concerned. Officials from the state and municipality are due to review the proposals on 3 November and draw up a plan with measures and deadlines.

The Green Party’s parliamentary group leader, Daniel Zadra, has called for a binding schedule with clear priorities and secured funding. Lustenau Deputy Mayor Martin Fitz of the Freedom Party has argued for a bypass to keep through traffic out of the municipality. State transport councillor Christof Bitschi has also pointed to the proposed S18 expressway and Feldkirch city tunnel, saying they could improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Austrian Traffic Club is calling for a 40 km/h speed limit on the federal road and traffic lights at some junctions and crossings. It says nearly 80 injury crashes occurred on the L203 and L204 state roads within Lustenau in 2025. The club also says 34 per cent of everyday journeys in Lustenau are made by bicycle, the highest share of any city in Austria.
