Fireworks initiative campaign uses opponents’ URL to challenge their arguments

A website using a URL that resembles the opponents’ campaign site is presenting counterarguments to the Swiss fireworks initiative as a fact-check. The site is run by supporters of the initiative, SRF reports.
The address feuerwerksinitiative-nein.ch resembles the opponents’ campaign branding in its design and colours. The opponents’ official website is nein-feuerwerksverbot.ch. The site’s legal notice identifies its actual operator, the animal protection association Tierschutz Helfer, which supports the initiative, and it includes an additional transparency statement.
Campaign consultant Marcel Schuler, whose agency Campaigneers specialises in election and referendum campaigns, said it was common for campaigners to reserve web addresses early, including ones that could be used by their opponents. This can make it harder for the other side to use a particular address, he said, though such tactics are not decisive in a campaign. Media coverage of a referendum proposal matters more, Schuler said.
Philipp Ryf, a board member of the association backing the initiative, said the website was launched independently of the association. Because its operators and political position are disclosed, he said, there was no significant risk of confusion. The association communicates only through its own official channels.
FDP parliamentarian Bettina Balmer, who opposes the initiative, said it was human nature to test boundaries but she was unhappy with an attempt to confuse voters. She added that voters generally also consider the recommendations of parliament and the Federal Council.
The initiative calls for a general ban on loud fireworks in Switzerland. Fireworks that make no noise would be exempt, and large professional displays could still take place with cantonal permits. Individuals would not be allowed to set off loud fireworks even at those events.
Swiss voters will decide on the initiative on November 29, 2026. Polls currently show it in the lead.
