Court overturns Schattendorf pedestrian-zone rule

Thursday 29th October 2026 on 12:30 in Austria

Burgenland, constitutional court, Schattendorf

Austria’s Constitutional Court has annulled a municipal rule restricting traffic at the border crossing in Schattendorf, ORF reported. The court found the ordinance establishing the pedestrian zone unlawful.

The crossing between Schattendorf, in Mattersburg district, and the Hungarian municipality of Agfalva could be used by vehicles only with an exemption permit. In a ruling dated 7 October, the court said the municipality had not adequately examined whether the legal requirements for the ordinance were met.

The ordinance will cease to have effect once the provincial government announces its annulment.
