Upper Austria’s housing security network kept people in their homes in 71 percent of cases in 2025, ORF reported, as the initiative marked 20 years of preventing housing loss in the Austrian state.

Since data collection began in 2007, the network has supported more than 45,000 households, including over 100,000 people and nearly 38,000 children. Upper Austria was the first Austrian state to establish eviction prevention in law, in 2006.

In 2025, the network supported 2,785 households and provided 90,941 consultations. In the Mühlviertel region, housing loss was prevented in nearly 90 percent of cases.

The network coordinates with municipalities, social counselling offices and regional homelessness support providers. Its work aims not only to prevent people from losing their homes, but also to find lasting ways to keep their housing, said Stefan Hindinger of BAWO, the umbrella organisation for homelessness services.

The state allocated about 1.71 million euros to eviction prevention in 2025, a 19 percent increase on 2023. Rising living costs and stagnant incomes have made housing support increasingly important, said Oliver Jungwirth, director of the Wohnplattform association.
