Salzburg Mayor Bernhard Auinger has outlined plans for a new 5,000-seat stadium for Austria Salzburg, ORF reports, with the proposed site at the Sportzentrum Nord sports centre in Liefering.

Auinger put the estimated cost at up to 20 million euros. The club’s current ground in Maxglan is expected to stop being available for professional football in about five years.

Last year, Auinger rejected calls for a new stadium, saying the city’s budget situation made construction unrealistic and describing the demand as “populist”. He said at the time that a new solution would be needed in the medium to long term.

Maxglan’s capacity is regularly stretched by high attendances at Austria Salzburg’s second-division matches, prompting renewed calls from fans for a replacement. According to the Salzburger Nachrichten, Auinger plans to hold talks with the club and the municipal council in the coming months. The newspaper reports that a new home ground could be ready by 2030.
