Autumn accounts for about 30% of annual revenue for the 66 florists in Burgenland, particularly during the days around All Saints’ Day, ORF reported.

Florists are working at full pace to make arrangements from natural materials, wreaths, bouquets and flowers for graves. The Agricultural Chamber says natural materials and fewer dyed elements are in fashion this year.

Sustainability is also becoming more important to customers, said Monika Metzner, deputy head of the guild for gardeners and florists. Regional plants, durable decorative elements and biodegradable materials are in demand, she said.

Although supermarkets and garden centres are putting increasing pressure on specialist shops, the guild says many customers still value good advice and skilled craftsmanship. Buying from a local business also supports regional economic activity and jobs, said Agricultural Chamber President Nikolaus Berlakovich.

Andreas Pomper, head of the Burgenland Gardeners’ Association, advised people to water their flowers regularly. With warmer weather, cut flowers and arrangements should be given plenty of water to keep them fresh for longer, he said.
