Vienna has installed its Christmas tree on City Hall Square: a 31-metre-high, more than 200-year-old spruce from Damüls, ORF reported. The tree weighs about nine tonnes.
The high-altitude spruce grew on a former alpine pasture at 1,350 metres above sea level. Its trunk is more than 90 centimetres in diameter, and its branches hang downwards, a feature that helps snow slide off.
The tree travelled to Vienna overnight on Tuesday. It will be shaped and decorated in the coming days with about 1,000 red and gold baubles and 2,000 lights. Its lights will be switched on at a ceremony on November 13, when the Vienna Christmas market opens. Mayor Michael Ludwig and Vorarlberg Governor Markus Wallner are expected to attend.
Each year since 1959, a different Austrian state has supplied the Christmas tree for City Hall Square, following a fixed rotation. The last tree from Vorarlberg was installed in 2017.
