Rail operator ÖBB will continue loading and transporting individual freight wagons on an 88-kilometre line serving Upper Carinthia and East Tyrol, ORF reports. The decision follows protests from politicians and businesses, while residents warned that ending the service could mean more trucks on the roads.
The ÖBB is seeking ways to cut freight costs, saying shunting is particularly intensive in staffing and resources. The plans had raised concerns among businesses about potential disadvantages.
The ÖBB and companies are due to hold initial talks next week to discuss solutions for single-wagon transport. The operator said it wants to work with businesses in East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia to find a solution.
