The Glasenbach Gorge, a popular walking area south of Salzburg, is expected to reopen to pedestrians before winter after three years of negotiations over access and work to replace its bridges, ORF reported.

The municipality of Elsbethen has secured walking rights after reaching agreement with 18 landowners. It is investing about 800,000 euros in the project, and one of the three bridges considered at risk of collapse has already been repaired. The other two glass-fibre-reinforced plastic bridges are due to arrive ready for installation, with work on schedule.

Construction manager Johannes Duscheck said the new bridges were designed as a long-term solution, alongside repairs to the abutments and work using rock anchors and shotcrete.

Mayor Matthias Herbst said the gorge would remain a walking and hiking route. The municipality has walking rights only, and the existing ban on cycling is expected to remain in force.
