Lower Austria’s state government has unanimously approved five additional turbines for the Großkrut-Altlichtenwarth wind farm in the Weinviertel region, ORF reported. The project is expected to generate enough electricity to supply more than 27,000 households.

The approval followed the successful completion of an environmental impact assessment, according to a government statement. Each turbine will have a rated capacity of 7.2 megawatts.

The expanded wind farm is forecast to produce about 96,000 megawatt-hours of renewable electricity a year and represents an investment of around 50 million euros, Deputy Governor Stephan Pernkopf said.

EVN and ImWind, a subsidiary of Wien Energie, will carry out the project. Pernkopf, EVN chief executive Stefan Szyszkowitz and ImWind managing director Karl Gruber said the expansion would strengthen the region’s energy supply and reduce dependence on energy imports.
