A 60-year-old driver was seriously injured when his car left the road and hit a tree in Michelhausen on Sunday. ORF reported that firefighters freed the man from the wreckage before he was flown to hospital.
The car left the road in a bend shortly after midday, according to the Michelhausen fire brigade. Firefighters, paramedics and police were called to the scene. The driver was still inside the vehicle when firefighters arrived, and paramedics began treating him through the driver’s door.
After consulting an emergency doctor, firefighters used hydraulic rescue equipment to create an opening through the boot and free the trapped man. He was placed on a spineboard and taken by the Christophorus 9 emergency helicopter to St. Pölten University Hospital, police said.
The driver, who was from Krems, had veered off the road to the left in a right-hand bend. The cause was not immediately known.
