Recent test runs on the rebuilt ice track in Innsbruck-Igls have raised hopes it will receive official approval, ORF reports. The track was modified after problems during last year’s inspection.
Luge, bobsleigh and skeleton athletes have been testing the track since Friday. Last year, the passage through curves 13 and 14 caused particular difficulties for luge athletes, and approval was not granted. The curves have since been reshaped and the track bases raised.
Luge athlete Lisa Schulte said she was “very positively surprised” and that curves 13 and 14 were easy to navigate. Wolfgang Kindl was also optimistic: he reported no problems in singles, while there were still some minor issues in doubles, but said progress was being made.
The World Championships are due to take place in February 2027, and the track must be officially approved beforehand. Luge federation president Markus Prock said he was very confident the track would receive its certificate and described approval as a formality.
A final decision is expected in mid-November, during an international training week at the track. The cost of the renovation remains unresolved. Operator Olympiaworld says the general planner should cover the costs, but no agreement has been reached with the planner or its liability insurer.
