Burgenland has Austria’s lowest proportion of residents born abroad, at 13.9 per cent, ORF reported, citing a new statistics brochure from the Austrian Integration Fund. Vienna has the highest share, at 41.3 per cent.

Across Austria, the proportion of residents born abroad has risen by 4.6 per cent over the past decade and is now just under 23 per cent. The increase in Burgenland was 3 per cent, the second-lowest among the federal states; only Lower Austria recorded a smaller rise, at 2.9 per cent.

Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Turkey are the most common birth countries among people born abroad who live in Austria. While 56 per cent of immigrants come from non-EU countries, that group includes people from Serbia and Turkey as well as Syria and Afghanistan. Others come from European countries, including EU member states and associated countries such as Norway, Switzerland and Iceland.

In Burgenland, people born in Hungary are by far the largest foreign-born group. Syrians rank 13th, just ahead of Swiss-born residents.

The brochure also reports differences in fertility rates. In 2025, women born in Austria had an average of 1.19 children, down from 1.38 in 2015. Women born abroad had an average of 1.57, compared with 1.92 in 2015. Women born in Afghanistan, Syria or Iraq had an average of 3.37 children. The figures suggest that fertility rates, as well as migration, may affect the population’s composition.
