A new district with housing, public facilities, leisure amenities and green spaces is planned for the former Laufen factory site in Wilhelmsburg, ORF reported. The roughly 76,000-square-metre site and an adjoining 7,200-square-metre plot have been bought by WIL Immobilienentwicklungsgesellschaft, a company within Montana Holding.

The town says the sale marks an important step towards redeveloping one of Wilhelmsburg’s most central areas. Plans are at an early stage, with an emphasis on fitting the development into the existing townscape while creating opportunities for living, working and recreation.

A preliminary study has been commissioned, and a detailed planning basis is expected by summer 2027. The town will be involved from the start, and plans are also to be developed in dialogue with residents.

The Swiss Laufen group, which makes bathroom ceramics, ended production at its Wilhelmsburg plant in 2020. The closure cost 130 people their jobs.
