Grödig seeks cycle route along A10 maintenance road

The municipality of Grödig hopes a maintenance road being built beside the A10 Tauern motorway can be adapted for cyclists and pedestrians, ORF reports. The highway operator ASFINAG says the road is not being designed for cycle traffic.

Cyclists currently use the narrow Glanegg state road to travel through the district. It has a narrow pavement on only one side, making the route uncomfortable for people on bikes.

ASFINAG is building the maintenance road to give its crews better access for tasks such as inspecting and repairing noise barriers and mowing. The work is due to finish by the end of November. Grödig Mayor Herbert Schober said the municipality would have to pay for any changes needed to make the route suitable for cyclists.

ASFINAG said it had heard about the municipality’s wish but knew of no formal request or detailed plans. The operator said questions including upkeep, maintenance and safety would need to be addressed for a public cycle route.

Separately, a new cycle path beside the state road near Glanegg Castle is expected to be marked and ready for use by the end of October or early November. The passage through the Glanegg estate, which has been closed for three years, is also due to reopen to pedestrians.
