An ASFINAG worker recognized that a truck driver stopped in a tunnel on the A2 South Autobahn in Carinthia was experiencing a medical emergency and alerted rescuers and police, ORF reported.
Shortly after midnight, operator Alexander Morre spotted the stationary truck on a monitor at the traffic management centre in Klagenfurt. He initially thought it had broken down, but realized it belonged to his neighbour, who drove through the tunnel every night. Morre called the driver and quickly suspected he had suffered a sudden spell of weakness.
Morre and his colleague Alexander Sticker called emergency services and police. Morre stayed on the phone with the driver until help arrived. The driver was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital as a precaution. The truck was later towed.
ASFINAG said the tunnel’s safety systems had detected the truck slowing down and stopping. In such cases, the camera feed is automatically displayed on a large alarm screen in the control centre.
