Bern cantonal government president Pierre Alain Schnegg is making himself available to succeed Parmelin on the Federal Council, the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation SRF reported, citing the Bern branch of the Swiss People’s Party (SVP).
The cantonal party described Schnegg as an experienced French-speaking executive politician from western Switzerland, citing his leadership skills and ability to get things done.
The SVP said several qualified French-speaking candidates would give the country the best chance of electing a French-speaking member to the Federal Council on December 9, 2026. Schnegg has served on Bern’s cantonal government for 10 years.
