Salzburg expects to save almost 18 million euros in the coming years by moving staff to a new state service centre and cutting civil-service posts, ORF reports.

The centre near Salzburg’s main railway station is nearly finished, with the handover due in just over two weeks. Thousands of state employees are expected to move there by March 2027.

The move will make more than six buildings unnecessary, ending their rent and operating costs. These include offices in Alpenstrasse used by the state’s payroll and controlling departments, as well as buildings housing its IT department and print shop.

State Governor Karoline Edtstadler said the state would save 4.4 million euros a year from 2027 through lower rent and operating costs. The sale of the former government building on Michael-Pacher-Strasse is expected to bring in about 10 million euros. The building will be vacated entirely.

The state also plans to cut 96 full-time civil-service posts by 2030, saving more than 8 million euros, Edtstadler said. These savings mean the state can avoid some other measures in its 2027 and 2028 budget.

A pay freeze for the state government and members of the state parliament, along with a freeze on funding for political parties and parliamentary groups, is expected to save a further 1.5 million euros by 2028.
