Nearly one in three households in Upper Austria has at least one annual pass for buses and trains, ORF reports. Almost 200,000 households in the state hold a pass, equal to 29 per cent. The same share applies nationwide, where nearly 1.7 million households have one, according to Statistics Austria.
At 703 euros, the Upper Austrian Klimaticket is the most expensive among Austria’s federal states. Salzburg’s, at 399 euros, is the cheapest.
The VCÖ transport organisation compared ticket prices with fuel costs alone. It estimates that someone commuting between Attnang-Puchheim and Linz could save about 3,300 euros a year with the Upper Austrian pass. Estimated savings on other routes in the state range from nearly 1,400 to 2,100 euros, including about 1,800 euros on the Steyr-Linz route and 1,500 euros between Schärding and Ried.
The VCÖ says wider use of the Klimaticket depends on good, frequent public transport connections. It is calling for further expansion of public transport and urging companies to support employees with tax-advantaged public transport job tickets.
