Hallein Gymnasium, a secondary school in Tennengau, will be recognised as a UNESCO school on Wednesday, ORF reports. The school joined the network after demonstrating a strong focus on sustainability.

It qualified through links between different school programmes and the implementation of several sustainability projects. Hallein Gymnasium is the first public secondary school in Salzburg province to receive the recognition.

Austria has 113 UNESCO schools, with considerably more in the east than in the west. School director Johannes Bitzinger said the network would help staff and students exchange ideas with other education institutions and learn from their work, including through student and teacher exchanges.

The school is hosting a three-day meeting of Austrian UNESCO schools, beginning Wednesday. Its focus is democracy in times of globalisation.
