Hofer to add self-service checkouts in 170 Austrian stores
Hofer plans to install self-service checkouts in 170 of its 540 stores in Austria by the end of 2027, ORF reported on Tuesday. The discounter, which is part of Germany’s Aldi Süd, said the move would make shopping more modern and flexible.
Customers will scan barcodes themselves and can select barcode-free items such as fruit, vegetables and baked goods on a screen before paying. Staff will be available to help if problems arise.
Hofer said its staffed checkouts would remain in operation.
