Scammers steal thousands after posing as bank staff

A 65-year-old woman from the Klagenfurt-Land district was tricked into giving scammers access to her bank account, leading to transfers of several thousand euros, ORF reported.

In the days before the fraud, she received repeated text messages claiming that her ID Austria login details were about to expire. On October 13, a caller posing as a bank employee told her that unknown people had hacked her credentials and were trying to access her account.

The caller said she would check and secure the account, and asked the woman to provide her login details by phone. The woman complied, and the scammers then transferred several thousand euros to accounts in Austria and abroad.

The woman reported the incident to police on October 19. Police are investigating.
