The tirol kliniken have launched a new app to support patients before and after heart surgery, with about 800 people expected to use it each year. The hospital group presented the Herzkompass on Monday, ORF reported.

The app will provide information videos, exercise instructions and checklists. Patients can access it with their ID Austria once they have been given a date for their operation. It is due to become available at the end of November.

The app aims to reduce patients’ uncertainty by giving them structured information they can revisit. Project coordinator and heart surgeon Leo Winter-Pölzl said patients have so far relied on pre-operation consultations, YouTube videos and ChatGPT, which can sometimes provide inaccurate information.

The digital service will not replace personal contact with doctors and nurses, the tirol kliniken said. Michael Grimm, director of the Innsbruck University Clinic for Cardiac Surgery, said it would add a digital channel for patients and provide a further basis for discussions with their care team.

The tirol kliniken developed the app through their Modularis digital care platform, in collaboration with cardiac surgery staff and specialist nurses.
