A 42-year-old man was seriously injured after falling onto the tracks at Munich’s Münchner Freiheit U-Bahn station and being struck by a train, BR reported. The incident halted U6 services for about 90 minutes and disrupted football fans travelling to the Allianz Arena.

The man, a German currently living in Austria, was at the station with friends at about 4.45pm on Saturday. Police believe he fell onto the tracks, possibly because he was under the influence of alcohol, as a train was arriving.

The train driver could not avoid hitting him despite braking manually. The man suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, including a fractured thigh, and was taken to a Munich hospital after being rescued from the tracks.

Police said the man and his friends were also travelling to the match between FC Bayern Munich and Leipzig at the Allianz Arena in Fröttmaning.

Before Sunday’s local derby between TSV 1860 Munich and FC Bayern II at Grünwalder Stadium, fans had travelled in separate marches without major incidents, according to a police spokesperson. Pyrotechnics were set off, but there had initially been no clashes between fans or with police.
